Yes I know this item was a recall but since it lasted for 184K miles, I
don't think I could go to them and ask them to replace it.
Way back, someone sent me this PDF file containing VW's official instructions:

It's surprisingly easy if you follow the instructions, with one notable exception: you have to be a fully-trained gynecologist to successfully replace those damn securing clips on the back. I just skipped them and it holds together fine.
