That's not my strut assembly and I don't have part #7(what is that?)
but...

 I have #4 going on at what would be position #6.5.  Maybe that's my
prob.  

I've been bolting the spring perch onto the strut and then putting the
strut bearing on (it fit on top of that nut so perfectly though).  It
doesn't quite seem a ... 

Maybe I should put the strut bearing over the spring perch and then
bolt all that to the strut???   That would explain the cupping of the
top 'hat'.  There is nothing between the hat and the strut bushing so I
can just keep tightening until I run out of room to tighten.

I think the HD have a little less thread on top too.
