In bentley they say that you can do it while everything is still installed
in the car.
Make sure the car is warm completely.
Work quickly to remove the valve cover.
For each set of lifters, turn the engine until they are at the TDC (cam
lobes pointing up).
With a dull non-metal object push down on each lifter and if it moves more
than 0.1mm (according to bentley), it needs to be replaced. (use just normal
hand pressure while pushing down).

I think you're supposed to take them out one by one, and squeeze between
thumb and forefinger. If you can get oil to squirt out, the lifter's bad.

NB: does not apply to professional thumb wrestlers.
