Chad,

You can test them out if to rule out the fact that the one you have is faulty.
Also, a liberal spray of carb cleaner inside the unit may clean it a bit as
well. Shake it out and you'll see the nastiness fall out.

I went through this with my 84 Gti to resolve the idle issue when the motor was
cold. It would not idle until the car warmed up. When 12 volts are applied to
the aux air valve (via ignition), the valve inside will close within 4-6
minutes. The element inside it will also force the valve to close when the
engine warms up via radiant heat. I never did resolve the idle issue but was
able to rule out a faulty or bad aux air valve.

When the aux air valve is cold, you should be able to look down the barrel of
the valve and see day light. The valve in this case should be at least 1/2 way
to 3/4 of the way open. You can adjust how far the valve opens with the lock
nut on the unit only to a certain degree. To test and ensure the valve opens
when cold, place the valve in the freezer for ten minutes.

The aux air valve is prevalent in any Bosch K-Jetronic environment, thus can be
found on some late 70's and early 80's cars such as Porsche, Ferrari, BMW,
Mercedes, et cetera. The location of depends where each brand felt they had a
spot for it.

Thanks,

Jim
