[a2-16v-list] tie rod replacement

I got a tie rod complete with inner and outer joints and planned to
replace the driver's side, but the manual indicates that the steering
rack has to be removed.  I really didn't want to remove the rack just
to replace tie rod if that isn't required.  Anyone done this with the
rack in the car?  I guess the problem is being able to hold the rack
solid enough to loosen the inner joint?
