I wish I had known about the dangers of Ethanol before I let my car sit. It has cost me a lot of time and headaches. I guess this is how you learn things sometimes, the hard way. Stabil is your friend… Btw, why don’t modern cars have these problems – do they use different rubber material in fuel system parts which are immune to ethanol effects? I will see if I can find some 92 octane somewhere near. To reiterate something we discussed some months ago, there is a website that helps you find ethanol free gas nearby: http://pure-gas.org/ One related question, if I can only find 89 Octane Ethanol Free gasoline near me – would any of the octane boost products help or are they just snake oil? I started using ethanol free fuel in some of my older vehicles a few years ago. That happened about the time when I purchased a new lawn mower. I have also used it occasionally in my Toyota Tundra as well. First time I did that was on a towing trip for an Antique Car Show. Found a convenience store selling ethanol free fuel right off I-81 in Virginia. With the lower gas taxes in VA that made the cost less than the ethanol fuel in PA. An added bonus was an 8% increase in fuel mileage when using the ethanol free fuel in my Tundra. I found a country store somewhat close to my house that sells ethanol free fuel. At the beginning of each summer driving season I fill up a few 5 gallon gas containers with ethanol free fuel, add some gas stabilizer and I am set. I use this fuel in my '87 GTI 16V, '80 Rabbit (carb), '81 VW Pickup and lawnmower. Since I do not drive these vehicles a lot I do not fill each of their fuel tanks so I do not have a lot of old fuel in their tanks. All the VWs I use this fuel in run MUCH better with ethanol free fuel especially the '80 Rabbit with the carb. The only downside to ethanol free fuel is the higher cost. For me that amounts to around .80 to 1.00 more per gallon. For me that is a small price to pay. Would be nice if the local Wawa sold ethanol free fuel. That might help get the cost down. BTW, the place I get my ethanol free fuel only sells that type of fuel and in 87, 89 and 92 octane. They do a brisk business with owners of motorcycles, antique vehicles and a LOT of Landscape Companies. The volume of sales is good because that means they get regular fuel deliveries so their fuel does not get old.
