Finding Engine Letter Codes The code characters which identify an engine can be easily viewed in the engine compartment. The code, GX for example, is given at the beginning of the engine number which is stamped on a flat area of the top of the engine block, just below the lower edge of the cylinder head and located approximately between the No. 3 and No. 4 cylinders.
