The best workaround is to break these ways up into segments that are smaller.

It is possible for the splitter to go back and when it finds that it
missed a node in a way, to go back and re-fetch it. However, this
requires an extra pass, more memory, and will generate files that
aren't ordered nodes-ways-relations (and may need to be re-sorted?).
