Details:
This patch almost guarantees that opened descriptors are closed after use by
using the "tryopen pattern". See Unix2 module changes for the
implementation.
The patch is quite large, so caution is advised.
It can easily the broken down however, since the pattern does not need to be
used everywhere at once.
