I think the first thing you have to do is do some research on that ADSL modem. 
If you decide to stick to networking between the PCs (and maybe share the 
connection from some other PC), just set up the ethernet card WITHOUT setting 
up an internet connection on Linux - just set up the LAN, and give it an IP 
address in the private range of your LAN.
