Why run the risk of breaking pulseaudio....it can be finnicky to get it to
work again with some soundcards....

I have just install the latest 'Alsa driver 1.0.22'.
With the kernel I'm using which is version 2.6.32, it works great.

Alsa main page for download is:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

The file has to be extracted and compiled but this is straight forward
with no dependency problems.

To check your sound card use 'aplay -l'
To check the Alsa version use 'cat /proc/asound/version'

Also in the terminal 'alsamixer' is a good way to adjust sound settings.

Have fun
