Are you sure it is not ending up someplace unexpected? There has to be a 
.mnemosyne folder, otherwise the program won't be able to start normally. Do a 
(computerised) search for .mnemosyne on your hard drive and usb drive.

After it's created and you verified that everything is working, you can copy 
the contents of .mnemosyne_renamed (or whatever) back to the .mnemosyne 
directory that was created by the program.
