There shouldn't be a big difference in practice. Here's the deal: In 1.x, both for scheduled and new/failed cards the default was 4. For new/failed cards, there was no difference between grades 2-5. In 2.0, for scheduled cards, the default still is 4. For new/failed cards, there is now a tiny difference between grades 2-5, and the default grade for these cards is 2. So, both in 1.x and 2.x, the default grade corresponds to 'success'. If this turns out to be a really big deal for many people, I guess the default for new/failed cards could be changed back to 4, but it will result in slightly more aggressive scheduling.
