The philosophy is that it's not a good idea to start memorising new stuff before you reviewed the stuff that you've already memorised, otherwise you'll get a big backlog. Still, if your new words have a certain category, you can deactivate all your other categories to study these first. Mnemosyne 2.0 will make this a lot easier, because there cards can have multiple categories.
