Well, if your sensitive data is in pictures or latex files, you need to check
the media directory too.

While running, sqlite creates a journal file with the outstanding transactions,
which I guess could also contain sensitive data. I'm not sure it's wise to try
and disable this, just like I'm not a fan of disabling Mnemosyne's backups :-)

So, I think this encryption is probably best handled at the file system level,
by using an encrypted file system, because the alternatives seem to provide a
false sense of security...

Yes I've looked into encrypted file systems but it's new territory for me.
Using gpg at the file level was the quickest way of getting something working, but certainly in the longer term I agree
that an encrypted file system is possibly a better route to go.
