We are in the 3rd grade - 9 yr olds - here in Brussels, working on our first words and phrases to learn English. Everyone already speaks French - Dutch and we meet a lot of children from the international community, we can communicate with in English. Our kids are also confronted with English via computer games, which are a huge motivating source of learning- of course! :). " "Grab this for an extra power", what does that mean dad?" !
Quick wins are always very motivating. I was looking for a list of words that we have in common with English - Dutch, English -French. I came across an article from the wikipedia " cognate (linguistics) - Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognate> " = words that are very similar in languages. Has anyone been so made a card set? I searched http://mnemosyne-proj.org/category/english, but found nothing. I started a list of "cognates" in an open google spreasheet, so you can easily import it into Mnemosyne: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12K1B7ljZl_6OK4EAL68PPVEj-6hCP3qp1JyaZQdiB-Y/edit#gid=0 And the idea is of course to expand it with techniques to help memorize stranger and stranger words by putting them in sentences that help you remember them. e.g. Dutch: citroen / English: lemon / French: un citron => Citron, on l'aime ou on ne l'aime pas. = pronounced "on Leme ou on leme pas => Lemon".
