The “star” system for pictures, videos, music files, emails, and so on is
well established in the digital world, and we use it completely
intuitively: you click a star icon and then filter by that star. In the
Mnemosyne Android app, however, there is no star icon—only a button labeled
“Star Card,” and all it actually does is add the tag “Starred.” I honestly
find this solution pretty clever, minimalist, and logical, but
unfortunately not intuitive at all. When I search for “star” in the card
browser, nothing shows up, and because I already use lots of tags, I never
would have guessed that a new tag called “Starred” had appeared. I couldn’t
find a single word about this in the documentation either. Only after
asking an LLM did I learn what “Star Card” does, and then I thought: why
didn’t I figure that out myself?

It dawned on me that my brain has hard-wired the star system to the
appearance of a visible star I can filter by—just like in browsers or file
managers where you mark favorites. That’s why the mental leap to a
tag-based solution didn’t happen.

Because this isn’t mentioned in the documentation, I’m writing this post to
ask that the behavior of the “Star Card” button (i.e. it simply adds the
tag “Starred,” after which you can filter in the card browser by selecting
it in the tag tree) be added to the main documentation on the website. It
would save newcomers—and apparently experienced users like me—a lot of
head-scratching. Thanks!
