Hi all,

We (the Fennec front-end team) have been working on a big UI revamp for the
Awesomescreen (where you search bookmarks and browsing history when you tap on
the main toolbar) and the Start Page (aka about:home, the one with the
thumbnails that you see when you start the app).

In terms of interaction, we're essentially merging the Awesomescreen and the
Start Page into a single UI element formed of swipable pages. This means the
page you'll see on startup is the same that you'll see when tap on the URL bar.

We've been hacking on this new UI in a separate repo called fig. Our plan is to
merge it to mozilla-central next week (August 19-23) and continue development
on m-c as usual. The new UI required us to rewrite large chunks of our Android
front-end code. So, backing out after we land on m-c is probably not an (sane)
option. Therefore, we have to be fairly confident that 1) We won't completely
break Fennec Nightly after we merge to m-c (at least not for too long) and 2)
There are no major issues in the new code that would stop us from shipping it
in Firefox 26 (the current cycle).

Here's where you enter! In order to increase our confidence in the new code,
we'd like to get a few more eyes on our latest fig builds to catch any
potential major issues before the merge next week.

If you have an Android device, here's how you can help:

1. Download and install the latest fig nightly build here:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/nightly/latest-fig-android/fennec-26.0a1.en-US.android-arm.apk

The build will be installed in parallel to whatever build (Nightly, Aurora,
Beta, Firefox) you currently have on your device.

2. What aspects of the UI should you focus on your attention on?

  * The start page. When you start Fennec, the new UI will be presented
straight away.
    - Does it show up properly? Any obvious visual/functional brokenness?
    - Is the content of each page/tab (History, Bookmarks, Reading List)
correct as expected?
  * Tap on the URL bar, the same UI should show up.
    - Does it show up properly? Any obvious visual/functional brokenness?
  * General browsing activities.
    - Add bookmarks, pin pages: do they show up properly in the UI?
    - Does browsing history show up properly in the Most Recent and Most
Visited tabs?
    - Does tabs from last session show up properly under the Last Tabs tab in
the new UI?
  * General UX feedback.

File bugs under product "Firefox for Android", component "Awesomescreen". Fig
bugs should block the meta bug 862793. Feel free to simply email me your
feedback if you're feeling lazy about using Bugzilla.

Important note: the current fig builds are meant to be release-ready. So, you
will find a few rough edges. The point of this call for testers is to catch any
major issues that could stop us from merging to m-c. As I said, we'll still be
polishing it and fixing bugs during the Firefox 26 cycle and beyond.

We'll be making a final decision on the merge to m-c on Friday (August 16). It
would be nice if you could send your immediate feedback before then. We'll
probably do a proper test day after we merge to m-c. It will be announced in
the usual channels, stay tuned.

Let me know if you any questions.

Cheers!
