i have a new idea about zoom/reflow/doubletap that i hope you will read and consider. in my view, firstly, pinch zoom should never reflow. This gives the ability to peruse the page as it is currently laid out, using zooming and panning, without the layout changing until you wish it. Secondly, use doubletap to toggle reflow. This way, the user can easily choose a readable text size by pinch zooming, then use a doubletap to reflow it to fit the screen. And then just as quickly, a second doubletap should toggle back to the un-reflowed layout, and use zoom instead to fit the current column on the screen (ie the behavior of what's currently the first doubletap). the third doubletap should toggle again by undoing the second.
For simplicity, and likely accordingly a better reception, the above suggests a simple two way toggle, which supplants a zoom-all-the-way-out doubletap. Pinch works well for that afterall. In all honesty i would be even slightly happier with a three way toggle, reflow on first doubletap, unreflow-and-zoom-to-fit on second, zoom-all-the-way-out on third, and on a fourth doubletap return to the reflow of the first doubletap. if you like that too, well great. While i'm at it let me say i think the right way to reflow is take notice of the first word showing in the column to be reflowed, and the end result should still show that word on the first line of reflowed text that shows on the screen. if that word was partially off the top of the screen, it should still be so. not to mention the reflowed text should be aligned so as to all appear on the screen laterally.
