Tonight we'll be moving implementation of the Gecko TouchCarets,
initially built as part of FF/OS, that will be replacing our current
Java Text Selection UI to m-c. (bug 988143).
It will be available behind two prefs : |touchcaret.enabled| and
|selectioncaret.enabled|, to allow easy switching between the two
versions. The prefs work together as a pair, so enable / disable them as
such.
We hope to find early adopters to check it out and file bugs,
suggestions, etc. It's been in dogfooding for awhile and stable, but if
you do spot something, you can file against the Firefox for Android /
Text Selection component. I expect a subset of any issues identified may
be more appropriately moved to Core / Selection if they involve
placement or manipulation of the UI components, but we'll work that out.
While the Carets change from angular to rounded and from orange to blue,
you shouldn't see any difference in the interaction of the handles and
our native Selection Actionbar. The handle positioning, becoming
inherent to platform, reduces a lot of our complexity.
If you have a "favorite" outstanding issue with the current
implementation, you may find it solved by the basic new version. I
recently checked through the issue backlog and found several instances
where we gain a solution upfront.
That's it for now, -- mark
