two tid-bits re negative use:

NY Times has had several stories recently about Mayor Bloomberg's plan to
ban mobile phones from schools, and parents complaining that they want
their children to contact them for coordination and safety when they leave
school. (Kids won't be able to bring phones at all to school.)

During the dot.com boom era, I had a student using a phone with a mike and
earphone to trade stocks during my lectures on internet and technology.
Asked the Dean what to do. Answer: disruptive practices are banned, so
student could listen on the mobile but not speak into it. (Note: texting
wasn't available in those analog days.)
