as far as sad songs go (maybe a bit late on this topic) i'd have to say, 
without a doubt "katy song" by red house painters.  the lyrics, the music, 
the plaintive, yearning cry that permeates the last 3 or so minutes of the 
song until kozelek's  voice becomes an instrument of pure saddening, 
heart-wrenching pain.
