hey all . . .this email came to me via the buddyhead mailing list (which i
forgot i was even on). i don't usually post this sort of stuff, as i know it
can piss people off, but i know there are at least a few listmembers here
that are aware of the greatness of the che cafe, so i thought i'd pass it on.

i'm afraid of it going the way of the equally great velvet elvis in seattle,
so, take a moment, even if you haven't been there . . .

and now, the message:

We got this email about supporting the che cafe, we posted it in it's
entirity...

"Friends:

The Che Cafe will no longer be booking shows... here's the deal.
5-31-00: There was a meeting held on UCSD campus between various
administrators and Che members. The admin. were concerened about liablility
issues regarding the shows at the Che. This is no surprise as they were the
ones who asked us to start having security at every show. We agreed to have
security and if you have been to any show this past few months you have
noticed how completely unnecessary they are. After we had conceeded to the
admin. on various measures, they finally pulled out the big guns. In this
meeting, they said that from now on, ALL shows were to be 18+, NOT all ages.
There are to be no more "Ins-and-outs," and that there will be no less than
3 Staff Pro security guards, plus a staff pro supervisor! This would mean
that our overhead for every single show would be at least 500 dollars.
The Che always has been all ages and always will be all ages!

Unfortunatley, there is nothing we can do to fight these new measures taken
by the UC. We are looking into taking the money we have accumualted over the
years and opening up a new venue somewhere in San Diego, but it will
definetley take a while. We are looking for a venue that is closer to
downtown San Diego, but things like this don't happen overnight. But we can
assure you, The Che Cafe is not going away! We might be gone for a month or
two, but we will return.

So for now, all shows that we had booked have to be cancelled, with the
exception of a few which there may be time to have moved. We will email
anyone on our email list about all upcoming changes, so if you're not on the
list, sign up now!

I urge everyone to PLEASE email the administration at UCSD to show your
disapproval of the effectual closure of the only all ages DIY venue in San
Diego. For some reason the school thinks The Che Cafe is some useless
building in middle of the woods, it would be nice for them to hear from all
the kids who support underground music and culture. Please forward this
message to anyone who would care and please email the administration at

P.S.
I urge you all to write the UC, but PLEASE be mature so we can get the Che
back. No swearing, no death threats... just be kind and gentle in expressing
your disapproval. Thanks."
