Dennis, Microsoft has documentation on how IE handles MIME types, content-disposition headers, etc. It may be out of date, and not accurate, but it's certainly worth reading. Have a look at:

Note that you can always tell your users to right-click on the link and select "Save Target As..." to get a save window.
