Stas gave you a link. There is also advice about upgrading software. In this case I think you could have saved yourself time simply by telling us that you were using Perl 5.8.0 which is known to have a few problems. I'd recommend upgrading to 5.8.3 when you can, although obviously you'll want to be cautious in production systems. My preference is to compile from source. If you leave both a new and an old version of Perl on your system, make sure you know which one is being used by your scripts.
