I'm using gcc 3.3.2. Will leave a build of gcc 3.4.3 running overnight and try rebuilding apache with that sometime tomorrow.
Actually realised this morning that one of our others servers is doing the same. Same versions of apache etc, this time on Solaris 9 built with gcc 2.95.3. That isolates the build tools from being part of the problem.
