No, when I invoked CPAN I did it as /usr/local/bin/perl -MCPAN -e shell (the location of the perl 5.8 binary)

There is more than one perl installed (an unfortunate side effect of IRIX). Any idea how to get cpan to only build using 5.8?

I think it might be as simple as:

/full/path/to/perl -MCPAN -e shell
cpan> install DBI

rather then

perl -MCPAN -e shell
cpan> install DBI
