Oh well. I've tried all the suggestions and the problem simply won't be resolved. It's obvious that although Knoppix is technically Linux, the capability to install software on a system is crippled. In fact, I can't even create a hard or soft link. I tried to install Perl 5.8.8 on the PC and it fails mysteriously. Somehow, I managed to install Apache. I'll just have to be satisfied with that and the stuff that comes with Knoppix.
This is my last message to the list, because it's time for me to take the advice of W.C. Fields. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up.
