That is THE fix!!! I had seen an earlier reference to the /etc/ld.so.conf, and edited it. But I never ran ldconfig. THAT DID IT!! The first sign of success was the multiple dedicated oracle clients that were launched by the startup.pl script (for Apache::DBI). All is working beautifully (knock on wood) now.
