Thanks that helped me figure out what broke. I used to run perlbrew with -Accflags=-fPIC which I foolishly assumed is not required. Adding it back got me through !
It's a different matter why perl doesn't use that by default since I do see it is set by default under Dynamic Linking for cccdlflags.
