Nice to know I can still count on Stafford for a smart ass answer.

The correct answer is that a well made coat is designed to be worn over a sweater or
suit jacket. This means that a well made coat should be bought in the same size as
the suit jacket size you wear. A coat of lesser quality may be prone to run small.

I agree with John in that there is no substitute for being able to try a coat on to be
sure, but if a coat is bought online for the reason that it is a difficult coat to
find in one's home town, then the possibility of trying on a coat is not a
consideration. Or better, inquire as to a return policy.

As to wasting the time of a retail sales force, it is a rare occasion that I trust the
opinion of a retail salesman anyhow. Typically, they don't know the differance
between a patch pocket and a slash pocket, much less be able to judge what fits. It
is a more common occurance that a retail salesforce wastes my time.

There are no hard and fast rules, and each manufacturer is going to cut
their coats slightly different. That's why you need to try a variety of
coats on, while wearing the clothes that you'd typically put on underneath
them.

But, if you are going to waste the time of a retail salesforce, I would say
that it is unethical to then buy the coat online. The difference in price is
the expertise and service of that store's sales staff (that is, unless you
hate the people who work at the store, in which case all bets are off).

Enjoy,
