| pablo: | | what do the inserts have to say of the Sons of Fred? i fell in love with | their version of "baby what you want me to do" and the only thing i've | been able to find of them is the paragraph in the liner notes of the | English Freakbeat comps they are on. thanks. Ooops... sorry, I didn't see your info request the first time I got through last week's messages. The notes on Rubble 2: Pop Sike Pipe Dreams don't tell much about this truly GREAT band either: "From Great Yarmouth, the Sons of Fred were one of those great third division bands (see: The Answers, Clique, Accent) that now enjoy fame as true exponents of Great British Freak-Beat. "Sweet Love" was a very strong Debut (sic), no sign of first-time nerves here, while their third single was pure pop-art tea- up job of the Jimmy Reed song, echoing the style of The Creation" DISCOGRAPHY: 06/65 Sweet Love / I'll Be There COLUMBIA DB 7605 12/65 I-I-I Want Your Lovin' / She Only Wants A Friend PARLOPHONE R 5391 03/66 Baby What Do You Want Me To Do (sic) / You Told Me PARLOPHONE R 5415 as Odyssey: 07/66 How Long Is Time / Beware STRIKE JH 312 Their Jimmy Reed cover also appears in the excellent EMI comp "R&B at Abbey Road" (NOTICE I'm praising a CD!), which includes the following blurb by Brian Hogg (who quite possibly also did the notes on Rubble): "The Sons Of Fred are represented by two selections on this CD. Their moody reading of "I'll Be There" was the flip of their debut single "Sweet Music" (sic). Excellent in itself, it paved the way for one of the period's most adventurous singles. Taking Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do", they created something truly exciting, stripping down the original's laconic delivery, upping the pace slightly and adding a swaggering panache. Recorded in 1966, when the R&B boom was ebbing, the single shows how a new sound was being hewn from its embers. Exciting and confident, it moves with an unhurried determination and makes the group's premature breakup all the more frustrating." Also included is a great pic of the band with totally unmatching attires, all smoking fags. Finally, their songs have appeared in the following comps "Sweet Love" in "Rubble #2: Pop Sike Pipe Dreams" LP (Bam-Caruso KIRI 025, 1986 England) Reissued in 1999 on Past & Present and "Rubble Collection #2" CD (Bam-Caruso) "I'll Be There" in "Trans-World Punk Rave-Up! #1" LP (Crawdad Wreckords, U.S.A), "Maximum R'n'B" CD (Reverberation VIII, 1996 UK) and "R&B at Abbey Road" CD (EMI, 1998 UK) "I, I, I (Want Your Lovin')" / "She Only Wants A Friend" in "English Freakbeat #3" LP (Archive International Productions AIP 10048 ,1989 U.S.A) and "English Freakbeat #3" CD (Archive International Productions AIP 1048, 1997 U.S.A.) "Baby What You Want Me To Do?" in "R&B Scene #1" LP (See For Miles SEE 33, 1985 UK) and "R&B at Abbey Road" CD (EMI, 1998 UK) "You Told Me" in "Delusions Of Grandeur #5", Tape "How Long Is Time" in "Psychedelic Archives - Pop-Sike - Tape #1" I have no further info on these last two tapes... anybody has?
