Right, to give Mr.x x some serious answers, and help him on his journey. 1) No, 70s stuff is not ugly. The things that stereotype the 70s are, mostly, ugly, but there were things produced that were aesthetically, or musically appealing. Just as the opposite is true of the 60s - the things that stereotype it are, mostly, good, while the crap has been swept under the carpet. It's taken 20 years for the anti-70s feeling to recede enough for design magazines to start considering the bits they got right. And to say that nothing from the mid-80s to early 90s will ever be considered classic - how do you reconcile saying that with getting at mods for not being up to date, if you don't believe there's anything worthwhile after '85? >So you don't >see too many mods painting up an '98 buick regal all fancy and calling it >mod, or wearing the current line of tommy hilfiger and calling it mod 'cause >it's not, it's an '98 buick regal or it's the current line of tommy >hilfiger. Right, so you're somewhere on the way to enlightenment here. Now add to this the fact that mods are not particularly nostalgic for flares, beards and naked hippies rolling in the mud, or even the early Beatles, so it can't be just a 60s nostalgia thing. On the other hand, later 60s jukebox / dancefloor jazz that was bypassed by most of the original mod factions, is now more popular (amongst mods) than it was then - so it can't just be about doing exactly as the 60s mods did. And add to the fact that while no mod today would wear a logo-ridden Tommy H jacket, there are plenty who wouldn't sniff at stuff from Paul Smith, Patrick Cox, Richard James, Duffer, Prada, and other smaller labels - even if they wouldn't pay the prices. Need it be said that these labels are a lot nearer the cutting-edge of fashion than Tommy H too . . . So in other words, there's a definite 'mod' thing beyond simple 60s nostalgia. The answer, I think, lies in a song performed by both Solomon Burke and The Artwoods. The search is yours. _______________________________________________________ Follow the U.S. presidential race on our Politics list! http://www.topica.com/lists/politics
