Confusingly there are actually two Phaidon books called 'The Sixties'.
One is David Mellor's book that matched an exhibition of the same 'The
Sixties in Britain and France' - a comparison of the cultural events in both
countries. The other is 'A Decade of Design Revolution'. Both are excellent,
though I'd say the latter would appeal more to design oriented Mods, and the
first to people with a wider interest in the 60s - though it does have an
interesting nugget about the birth of the skinhead apparently being in North
East England, not East London. I'd pick up Mellor's 'The Sixties Art Scene
in London' (also Phaidon) before his 60s book - almost a neccesary read for
anyone interested in the parallels between the birth of the mods and the
birth of Pop Art in the UK. Haven't regretted buying any of them.
