The more you talk about 'Mod' the less mod you are. The more you are
quietly cool, stylish and damn funky, the better. There was a guy down
this way (New Zealand) who went by the name 'Dave the Mod'. Just cause
he knew how to tune a Vespa. What a Plonker. Less talk, more action. But
with no fuss, eh?
Modernists should be confident, stylish, and knowledgable. If that means
trading in your parka, your Fred Perry, your Ben Sherman, three button
suit and hush puppies and opting for a look no-one's seen before, more
power to you. If you decide you're into electronic music, but you still
know where those samples came from, great.
I'm 34 and my first experience with scooters and the trappings of a mod
sub-culture was when I was 16. I've played in soul bands and left that
behind in favour of original guitar pop. It's hot down this way in
Pacific paradise summertime and I wear rayon shirts and Italian slides.
And I still love soul, funk and jazz though I'm just as likely to listen
to Dimitri or Kid Loco or You Am I. I don't have a scooter but my
flatmates all do....and they're not in the slight bit interested in mod
or what it means.
I guess what I mean is .....lighten up fer fecks sake!
Into the future eh lads and ladesses?
