Just had to chip in on this soul thread...
Don't know about anyone else, but I find Paul's recent theories on
Northern/Motown/Stax a little hard to stomach in light of the fact that his recent
purchases include stuff by Otis, Dobie Gray and Booker T.....I seem to remember Paul
asking last year for someone to tape him some Booker T. stuff, so whats happened over
the last few months that.....
(a) Has turned you into Soul Boy numero uno
(b) Has prevented you from making CRUCIAL beginners Soul purchases?
I'm not getting at you Paul, but c'mon, if you dont have much spare cash for records,
and you aint got the essentials, where has the 'right' to argue over the virtues of
the Northern Soul scene come from?
Dont get me wrong, I'm no Soul genius, but I've enough in my collection (comps and
indiv artists LPs and singles) to warrant calling myself a 'soul fan', and I was
buying Otis, James Brown, Aretha years back (Julian - ignore the fact that I bought
that History of Rock soul comp the other day will you - ha, ha!). Its just one genre
of a good few that I'm really into.
