Yeah I know - Bill Clinton eh? And for heaven's sake don't take me as
representative of the British educational system. (Which hardly needs me to
defend it). We're a 'melting pot' too - lordy have you never heard of Blue
Mink?! ('Take a piece of Chinky...' or whatever they sang in all their
wisdom).
Hmm...'Hitler was too incompetent to actually take your island' - a cynic
would almost think that this statement was your subtle way of deriding the
achievement of the British forces. Still, I (being deeply happy-go-lucky and
amiable) know that you wouldn't really be thick-skinned enough to do this
since yours are even today internationally renowned for their curiously
self-congratulatory inability to organise a piss-up in a brewery. So you
'saved' the French, the Dutch and the Germans. Very kind. Sorry to
over-stress a point but - you didn't do it all on your own. And, in any case,
it was the least we all could have done.
I bloody hate militarism and jingoism (I'd be equally sickened if those
statements were from, say, a British person directed at someone from mainland
Europe) and have to respond when somebody writes to a 'modslist' and has to
make patronising references to World War II in order to defend Americans
(something that could surely be done by other means - I could do it, why
can't you?)
I suppose our 'best and brightest' are always going to go where the money is
- still - please feel free to keep hold of Catherine Zeta Jones, Rod Stewart
and Jackie bleeding Collins.
Denial of horrible Protestant work ethic: I have been unemployed for a
fortnight after four days in a new job and am having a great time. Even when
I had a job I never actually 'worked' in any meaningful sense - I mentioned
it cos that bloke seemed to think that life over here was in some way
'relaxed.'
And who the hell was Charles Babbage then? He must have done summat
significant to have had the computer on 'Family Fortunes' named after him.
Genuinely interested,
Natalie
P.S. Sorry for being self-seeking but - can somebody do me a brief summary of
the car thread please? Can anyone name any current cars that aren't crap yet
manage to avoid being completely devoid of style?
