I think this was the title of my last post on a great night down the
Mousetrap.
        Well. What can I say?!
I'll try and say it all so that neither Messers Cox nor Dixon
can complain!
After being subjected to a nightmare trip down on the train,
running headlong into a stream of burly football hooligans in Doncaster
(imagine the scene, candy striped trousers, paisley neck scarves and bald
meatheads) I was amazed that there wasn't a queue outside as we pulled up in
the taxi. And I was handed my free Larry Trider 45. Don't listen to the Mike
Proctor fans. 'Mr Commuter' was awful. The record was cut with this Coral
magic in mind! Well. Inside, it was a different matter. People everywhere,
'millions of 'em'! And what's this I see, suitably in the view of my eye?
Roger Banks and his records? Oh this was going to be good.
Mr Cox being the first person I spotted, I talked as I slipped
on the obligatory dancing shoes and ventured out onto the heaving dancefloor
of the Soul Loft. That night they should realy have renamed it the R'n'B
Loft as hefty rhythm and blues monsters constantly flew on and off the
struggling turntables. I knew the DJ's wouldn't disappoint. Such massive
R'n'B tracks as Daisy Buriss' 'Four Strong Winds', Cookie Jackson's 'Do You
Still Love Me' (one I needn't have begged Banksy for!) and Charles
Sheffield's 'It's Your Voodoo Working' were all spun to the delighted
appreciation of the Mod collective. Then Mr banks arrived on the decks. The
loft became a furnace as people crammed the dancefloor to capacity. You
couldn't move as Roger pulled out Peppermint Harris and Helen Troy to claps
and whistles (from me!). Then a newie. What a record. Even though a few left
the floor, those who remained were glad they did!
Kat Dixon was with me most the way, enjoying it every little
bit as I did. Dancing when I couldn't and vice-versa. The Northern Club
Carnaby St. massive turned up, all five of them, 'Trap virgin Ian telling me
he was booking his ticket back for the next one! I couldn't begin to stress
enough the quality of music played. Every tune I hoped I would hear got an
airing. And to anyone who might claim that the music down there is too
exclusive, the 50 or so people dancing or trying to dance if they could
actually get on the dancefloor to 'I'll Keep On Holding On', or 'My Weakness
Is You' would have had to disagree. Surprised to hear the Isleys' 'Why When
Love Is Gone', but certainly not complaining cos it's my fave Isleys tune
ever!
Then quick as a flash, Uncle Bob took to the decks to finish
off. I knew my night wouldn't be complete without the song they didn't play
last time. So over I went to request it. And so it was played. THE final
tune in the soul loft. As I heard the slow brass pierce the air. There could
only be one tearful reminder of the night, as I kept on singing it to Kat
and DOrian for the next 20 mins! I saw one more mature Mod lady smile as I
closed my eyes and screamed the chorus..'just please... please stop
pretending.. .. and Just Say Goodbye'
What a night to be had in the Soul Loft. Expect me back
down there in May!

Hightlights: Meeting Andy BB. And wondering all night if he really
HAD spiked my previously pure, now rather
chalky tasting, water.

Annoying Kat Dixon by telling her the artist to
every tune and
dancing the night away with her. Always a pleasure!

                         No Paul Secular.

Having an inpromptu dancing contest with some older
dandy at the end of the night while others were to tired to
dance to some rather fast dancefloor jazz.

Cleveland Robinson - Love Is A Trap.
Big Daddy Rodgers - I'm A Big Man.
Clyde McPhatter - I Never Knew
Cookie Jackson - Do You Still Love Me

Low points: Losing said dance contest. Miserably. Hats off to the
bloke. I
just hope he isn't at Scarborough.

                         Too small dancefloor

                        No Paul Secular

No Abigail, Joanna and Paul Flynn, and Alexis, all of
whom I'd
let down the night before by not attending Brighton Beach.

                     All for now.
                         Matt
