Do you mean Rachel Whiteread?  Her "negative" casts
are aesthetically beautiful and strangely haunting;
and some--like that concrete cast of an old house in a
newly gentrified English neighborhood(the name of the
town escapes me at the moment)--even comment
critically on contemporary issues.

Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Cindy Sherman, Barbara
Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Adrian Piper, and Matthew Barney
are some other contemporary artists I think have taken
up the idea that an artist might be more than a
senstive person with talent, might in fact be both
intelligent and articulate, might have something
important to say.  But I must admit the likes of Jeff
Koons do make me want to vomit.
