Well,
After a round trip of London courtesy of Mr Flynn and an endless
search for the venue, we finally arrived, fashionably late (adds to the
mystique apparently!), at Londons, St Christophers Village. And what a night
it was! Miller, Lupton and a licorice assortment of New Untouchables DJs
provided the 60's R'n'B and soul monsters which kept the interested
interested and the rest in awe! The crowd was an amalgam of familiar Mod
faces from every which where. London locals, Leeds, Manchester, Pontifract,
Kent, they came from afar to dance and be merry. Amongst these stylish
stalwarts were what seemed to be a college party at what will no doubt be
the best 'school disco' they'll ever attend. They alternated their time
between watching the 60's types compete for dancefloor superiority and
having a dabble themselves.... and thoroughly enjoying evey minute of it
(after all it was probably the first time a lot of them had been allowed out
after midnight!).
The venue itself was a perfect 'below street level' affair with
a nice fast, if tiny, dancefloor. However despite its shortcomings in size,
it seemed to happily accommodate those who were only interested in getting
thier kicks on the floor.
But back to the music! It went from rare R'n'B to Northern
soul in the shake of a heel. And back again just as fast, proving it's not
just what you've got but how you play 'em! Everything from Jimmy Ruffin to
Al Reed, Larry Trider to Timmie Williams. Lashings and lashings of uptempo
rhythm and soul kept everyone in high spirits until Esther Phillips crept
upon us once again, cruelly signalling the end of the nights frivolities. At
2:10am, the crowd said their goodbyes, dished out their appraisal to the
numerous Dj's, and left... for the 100 club......which despite its
lightening fast dancefloor, rarer cuts and better attendance, didn't even
compare....
I know which side of the tracks I'll be staying on......
Travelling man,
Matt....
