As you can imagine, having a house with Helen "Dansette", we have bought the 
odd old record player over the years!
The common fault I've found is that the turntable usually needs lubricating 
- remove the circlip on the middle stalk and look for the contact points 
that move round, but have only a little grease left on them. Usually there's 
a blob of grease doing nothing(or get some auto-grease) and liberally apply 
to all moving parts that seem a bit stiff.
This is all it normally needs to get them working - unless it's an 
electrical problem - where you should see an electrician, unless you want to 
blow-up.
If they are completely beyond repair - just take out all the workings and 
turn it into an attractive cocktail unit - and drink your worries away 
whilst listening to the ones that DO work.
My favourite portable was a Marconniphone that I used to have - scarlet red 
on the outside, and VERY white on the inside(a touch of class).

Some of the above information can be applied to anyone who has bought a 
second-hand "Jason Tinkey" action-figure (but dont take my word for it).
