Exciting news...Here's a run down on the new new new Mini Cooper.
The NEW Mini Cooper (by BMW)
(excerpts from AutoWeek 9.18.00)
Frank Stephenson, an American who grew up in Europe, was given the
responsibility of redesigning the Mini.
The genetics and character of the old car had to be carried over. Wed be
shooting ourselves in the foot if we didnt keep that look. Unlike, say, the
PT Cruiser, the new Mini is not a retro-design car drawing influence from cars
of yore, but rather an update of the original, a direct successor.
There will be no BMW badge on the car. Dedicated sales staff and environments
are a requirement, with only 70 to 75 Mini franchises expected to be allotted
in the United States.
The new car has standard 16-inch wheels, finished either in white or silver.
An optional panoramic sunroof will be available. Will be available in 14
colors, with either black or white for the exterior mirrors and roof (for
those wishing to adorn their Minis with the Union Jack, a tape kit will be
available). The doors open 90 degrees. The trunk can be opened remotely. A
CD system will be standard with a Harmon Kardon speaker system offered as an
option.
The Mini is being built in Oxford England. The public will get its first look
at a production model at the Paris motor show Sept. 28 with full production to
start early next year. US sales will begin in the first quarter of 2002, and
while no official price was given, the car is expected to sticker for around
$18,000. of the 100,000 annual production will be sold in the US.
If your first look at the Mini doesnt bring a smile to your face, then
youve got no automotive soul
