OK, I fully understand that. But BARS? Jesus Christ you ain't there
for your your health in
first place! And now they're talking about banning it in OUTDOOR sports
stadiums!
I even heard talk of Berkeley (of course) wanting to ban ANY outdoor
smoking in "public places"!
That's the only thing I find unappealing about California as a whole. I was
in LA last march, and my urge to light up after ordering a drink was quickly
suppressed by the looks of horror after I actually did light up at the bar.
The cattle-herding of smokers into outdoor "patio" corrals actually became
too much of a hassle for me. Standing shoulder to shoulder with nicotine
fiends, unable to even pivot to the left or right was a nightmare. The fact
is, you really didn't even need to light up your own smoke outside, as the
smoke from the 100+ crowd squeezed into a 50X25 space was enough to satisfy
any craving. I guess the best way to kick the habit is to spend a week in
Cali. But the option of buying liquor in a convenience store, rather than a
state controlled outlet, is a perk that quickly makes up for this
shortcoming. Banning smoking in "outdoor public areas" is really a disturbing
proposition. Doesn't suprise me a bit in this day and age though. We're
sitting on the threshold of a modern day "prohibitionist" movement with
tobacco as the new target. The next 10 years will see it classified as a
controlled substance, to be sure.
