I dig alot of the material suggested, especially Embrooks, but find
alot else to be homogenous revival and slippery pop-punk, mod in it's
semblance to pre-beat english stuff? Luckily a friend had the Nuggets I&II
disks, which I also liked (can't find Chocolate Soup or Rubble anywhere); it
wasn't exaclty what I'm curious about though, so I suppose a bit of
clarification is called for:
Situation is I'm trying to put together things to spin for a party next
month that will not likely be receptive to the typical mod-rock-soul stuff.
It's more of a techno-friendly crowd. That in mind (and with my contempt for
bouncy raves), I've naturally gathered all the beats and hip hop I have
(Automator, Kool Keith, Portishead, Shadow, ect). What I'd really like to do
though is edge in some more layered stuff, with guitar, Hammond, and such,
like I've heard in the City. Since Sean and others were playing it, I'd like
to know where to find some. Wish I could be more specific, but my experience
has been pretty narrow: American soul and mainstream breaks, pretty much.
Hope that helps, your suggestions are appreciated, as always.
