Thanks, how about those "this is mod" compilations?

Off the top of my head: see as well, e.g., the three
volumes of Doin' the Mod (Vol. 1: The Go Go Train; Vol
2: Jump and Dance--this is the best of the three, by
the way; and Vol 3: Maximum R&B); Decca's The Mod
Scene (and Vol. 2 is actually stronger on basic
material than the first disc), as well as (at LEAST)
their The Freakbeat Scene and The Northern Soul Scene
(The Beat Scene and The Girls Scene are favorites as
well; The Psychedelic Scene, The R&B Scene and The
Rock & Roll Scene round out the series); Freakbeat
Freakout (prev. mentioned elsewhere); English
Freakbeat Vols. 1-6 (Vol. 5 is my favorite; Vol. 6 is
largely the old Pebbles "Mod" Vol. 6); The Very Best
Northern Soul All-Nighter ... Ever! (and it really is,
so long as you've rid yourself of that nasty NS habit
of preferring rarity/obscurity over brilliance);
Talcum Soul Vols. 1 & 2 (Vol. 2 is stronger, but Vol.
1 has some indispensible gems not found on other
comps; very little overlap overall); Hipshaker!
(fabulously eclectic); Blow-Up! (ditto, with some
well-chosen contemporary material; see also their
library music comps, 4 vols. so far, I believe; Vol. 2
is my favorite, 3 & 4 feat. French tracks); Mod Fave
Raves Vols. 1 & 2 (ostensibly second-line Motown
singles which nonetheless generally outshine
better-known Tamla tracks); and, among the several
comps. (mod, Northern Soul, whatever), titled The In
Crowd, in particular, the 4 disc Paolo Hewitt-selected
box set. Which would not be a bad place to start ...

That This is Mod series (6 vols. now, I believe)
compiles tracks by ca. '79 revivalists and
fellow-travellers, as I recall. Another potential
flamewar: I've nothing in particular against Secret
Affair, The Lambrettas, Squire, The Jolt, and, esp.
The Chords (best of the lot), but ... and I've always
thoughyt that each wave of bands only listened to the
previous wave, which accounts for the exponential
blanching of what had been a presumably soul/R&B
inspired sound, but ... but I believe that, of the
ostensible front line there (which at best believed
themselves to be the second line Jam, who themselves
are more properly situated archaeologically with The
Sex Pistols, The Clash, et al., and genealogically
with The Who, Kinks, Small Faces, et al.), only The
Merton Parkas and The Purple Hearts show up on any TIM
volume. What I don't recall is being much compelled
to listen to much of any of it more than once. If
you've got the cash and the will to completism, go for
it, but ... but there is a sort of Vol. 0 "Best Of"
(This is Mod, no vol. no.) that you might start with,
see if you want to go all out ...

What somebody SHOULD be cutting is all those trailing
previously-posted messages. No need to repost
EVERYTHING in every given thread. Presumably, we've
already read it all, so ... so I think you boys are
having a little misunderstaning, is all, though I also
think M. Geddes might do well to tone down his
disparagement of not only some perfectly fine records
but also of his fellow (and, esp., lady) Modslisters.
We've already seen someone unsubscribe here in recent
days over such cattiness, and one can only imagine
that, for every delister that goes to the trouble to
say a little something about it, there are more who
simply send their unsubscription notice and leave it
at that. The autodestructive paradox at the heart of
any elitism in action here, believing everyone else
should share one's beliefs whilst not actually wanting
them to, even requiring them NOT to so as to set off
all the more one's (generally mistakenly) presumed own
brilliance ...

Subject: RE: those nuggets albums
Point is, there are far, far more than twenty, or a
hundred, or a thousand, or ... "brilliant" tracks to
be found out there, although a not-so-relative few
will be so lucky as to even hear that first twenty or
so in their lifetime. And more power to those who
search in earnest for them (me, I'm trying, at least
...). However, far too many compilations and club
nights (where one presumably has that extra
responsibilty to spin something on the reasonably
danceable end of affairs) and so forth are littered
with tracks seemingly selected ONLY for their
obscurity and/or rarity, which can be a real drag when
you're investing real time and/or money. Which is NOT
to say one should not go that extra mile/kilometer to
dig deep, not to mention to dig the deep cuts. One
should indeed expect the unexpected. But for those of
limited resources (and we ALL have our limitations,
non?), not to mention those just getting into "The
Scene" (which is hardly the monolithic unity said
phrase implies, non?), there's no point to wasting
time/effort/money, not to mention running the risk of
terminal discouragement/disinterest (non?). Which is
why those in the know (at the horizons of which I
hover at best) ought not to disparage the introductory
and/or (as I'd argue) the essential as not ev'ryone
has already been there, done that, et al. Which
raises a question I'm sure no one here will lack an
opinion on: what consitutes "essential" listening
here? Those In Crowd and Nuggets II box sets are
hardly the worst places to start. But, further, what
rarities/obscurities ought to be? Proponent of a
helathy hybridty (vs. a sterile purism) that I am,
reecnt favourites have included Dee Clark's "That's My
Girl" and Ronnie Bird's "SOS Mademoiselle," though
neither is particular rare or obscure. But I'm always
up for some recommendations, and I might even go to
the trouble of picking them up. Or are we in that
elitist Catch-22 again, here disparaging the tastes of
others whilst not wanting to share our own carefully
horded treasures? Let us know, any which way ...

Truth be told, I'm just fine with the Nuggets comps, & love The Embrooks. A
little too "mod" for me (I'm more into Tamla & neoclassic), but all the
same, well, that thought. 'Looks to have stirred everybody up though; what a
cyber orgy. Beautiful. Can we argue about Belle & Sebastian or something
now?

Very good then. Now, not having much kept up with
music past the twentieth century, did look up that
Remy Shand you mentioned, e.g., ...
http://www.remyshand.ca/
Although instantly appalled by the knit hat/facial
hair ensemble, I'm nonetheless intrigued by the fact
that he just so happens to be recording for Motown
(his "official" Motown site, http://www.remyshand.com,
however, isn't coming up for me right now). Will
investigate, report back ...

Me, I've been so taken for so long by B&S's "Star of
Track and Field" that I've barely gotten past that
track alone, though I did pick up the "Lazy Line
Painter Jane" for the Monica Queen (ex-Thrum) guest
vocal, and that there's a spot-on cover of France
Gall's Serge Gainsbourg-penned/conducted
Eurosong-for-Luxembourg entry, "Laisser Tomber Les
Filles" (perfect for prancing in yr finest white go-go
boots) available in convenient bootleg form. See--or,
rather, hear--also the April March covers thereof,
both in French, and, cleverly translated as "Chick
Habit," English ...

Remy Shand will take some patience. It's not "rockin'" in the slightest,
would sound alright in an elevator, and maybe a bit too heavy on the Al
Green/late-Marvin Gaye emulation. Still, the big labels don't turn out alot
of well structured neo-classic material, so it's refreshing to see Motown
doing it. Two other factors this guy has going
1. He plays basically every instrument, except some of the horns, himself.
2. Writes his own.
3. Gives free downloads.
So I've made my pitch. Anybody else with a palate for modern neo-classic
soul should give it a try. The website Arriva posted is great with some
downloads.

Ha. Speaking of a bunch of drivel that nobody wants to read...
(and one who presumes their own brilliance)...Your pomposity is
really hilarious, but gosh, I shure nuff am impressed with yer
big wurds. I have no time for people who join a supposed "mod"
list, (knowing merely the basics...or less) and then disparage
those who have no interest in their mainstream indie rock taste.
Why join it in the first place? That's why everybody jumped ship
a couple years ago for greener pastures. Me? I'm a glutton for
punishment I suppose.
But keep babbling, you're amusing me... dahling.

"You don't know what I know," to quote Sam & Dave
and/or All Saints (catholic with a lower-case "c").
Or what I don't know. But, again, that's what I'm
here to find out, precisley what I don't know. Again,
recommended listening, Daniel, anyone?

One of my very own "big wurds." You flatter me ...

I thought we were talking about "Those Nuggets
Albums"? Mind you, much of what appeared on that very
first Nuggets LP became "mainstream" only because The
Venerable Lenny Kaye kindly compiled them for
posterity (coining the term "punk rock" along the
way). And much of that second recent Rhino box set
is, soul, R&B, even jazz records aside (and here see
again that Paolo Hewitt-selected Polydor In Crowd 4CD
set), either core mod curriculum (Small Faces, Action,
Birds, et al.) or well-chosen and not readily
available otherwise related garage/psych/whatever
material. Again, not everyone simply HAS these
records, much less knowledge of them, time and
wherewithal to find them, resources to acquire them,
et al. Again, not everyone has "been there, done
that," though I do believe many, most, even, here, do
appreciate further recommendations. I know I do, at
least, again, that's why I'm here, so, if you'd be so
kind as to enlighten us with yr own presumed
brilliance ...
If you boys want keep yr pissing contest well within
yr own little circle, then do so, but be good enough
then not to spatter the rest of us nonetheless ...
> Why join it in the first place?

insults? I would suggest that the preponderance of
the latter here might instead be the reason why

You, and the several dozen others at least I've seen
post here in my own on again/off again dalliance with
this list. But where are these "greener pastures"?
Other side of the fence? Will consult the Ray Davies
songbook ...
> I'm a glutton for punishment I suppose.
Would it be "presuming my own brilliance" to suggest
that I provide a gourmet smorgasbord thereof then?
Take all you want, but, please, eat all you take.
Just remember to take a clean plate with each visit to
the buffet, is all I ask ...

Again, entertainment value, dahlink (doing my best
Wanda von Sacher Masoch and/or Eva Gabor here) ...

So you don't have any recommended listening for us,
then? Any alternatives to that unjustly maligned
Nuggets comp, for example? I would have thought
name(artist/track/label)dropping was the name of the
game here, or would at least be expected of those
slagging off the simple questions of others ...
Having perused the archives, here's something for you.
Try Lulu's "Show Me." Faster and punchier than Joe
Tex or Los Bravos, with an extended instrumental
opening. Maybe even her cover of "Can I Get a
Witness." "Love Loves to Love" is, however, indeed
her finest floorfilling moment. We agree on that
much, at least. Serving suggestion for the latter:
c/w The Vernons Girls' "Dat's Love" and/or Shirley
Ellis' "The Clapping Song" (an Afrika Bambaata fave as
well, see that Scratch documentary) ...

So what do you all discuss here, then? Or do you just
kill time fielding each others' insults? Am grateful,
however, for the club night/record review/band gig
listings, the playlists, the sales catlogs. By the
way, I'm likely to have been up at least a full
twenty-four-plus hours by the time I get around to
sleeping sometime tomorrow (?), so if you want to see
cranky ...

I feel like I should say something to piss somebody off, but I just got back
from my best friend's funeral, am piss drunk, and would probably be nice to
even Geddes right now. Well, for what it matters, I think this whole
'pissing in each other's cherrios thing is great. I get a kick out of it and
hope somebody trashes my posts as much as I love to trash thiers. On another
note, I know there are some neo-classic/contemporary soulies on this list. I
could sure use a recommendation. I love the recent D'Angelo, as well as Remy
Shand, but what else is good?

Phew!....I can't believe you actually wasted your time searching
the archives for that shit...hoo-boy, that's funny!
Get a grip honey, it's all just to wind-up windbags like yourself.
And nope, no recommendations for ya, sorry...
You'll just have to assume I know nothing, right?
I insult people. Not everybody though. Say something intelligent
that isn't contrived, or some attempt at self-aggrandizement ($3.50),
and I'll probably say nothing, or maybe even agree.

Just in from being, well, out (the weekend starts here

I suppose so, especially considering you've apparently
no interest in demonstrating otherwise. One typically
counters the presumed "bad" taste of others with some
presumed evidence of one's own presumed "good" taste,
but having not yet seen quite what that might entail
on your part here ...

Is this a mission statement? Rememeber, quantity does
not necesarily equal quality, repetaed attempts do not
necessarily guarantee success ...

You've been given every chance already, so ... so
there's at least one of you everywhere, certainly,
everywhere on the Internet, a smartass who, given the
relative safety of being out of immediate harm's way,
think he (and why does it always seem to be a "he"?),
figures he's impressing, I don't know, SOMEBODY, if
only perhaps himself, in whatever handful of people
might be reading, by being a c*nt (pardon my ladylike
self-censorship) to anyone daring to disagree ...
At any rate, it's to the credit of everyone else here
that there's not some gang of droogs snivelling behind
you slowly stepping up to get their kicks in as well.
Though I'm worried (again) that Thaddeus is anxiously
curling up on the ground hoping to recieve his.
Boots, furs, Wanda von Sacher Masoch accent ...

First off, able only to offer the most inadequate, the
only possible response here, I'm very sorry to hear
that. I consider myself lucky in that I'll very
likely NOT have to endure the deaths of my friends
before my own, so ...
> Well, for what it matters, I think this whole

... but perhaps you shouldn't drink so much? No, I'm
very disappointed to see very little real discussion,
or even just plain conversation, go on here, and I
suspect that that's largely the result of such
rhetorical sadomasochism. I was hoping at least to
find out what's up in the modern world at large these
days, but ...
> On another note, I know there are some neo-

> could sure use a recommendation. I love the recent

... but here's where I'm at a loss to return the
favor. Fifteen or so years ago I might at least have
been able to say, what about The Style Council
("You're the Best Thing" still works wonders at yr
better weddings), or maybe even The Redskins (of whom
I don't recall enough to claim to have been a fan or
otherwise), but ...
But another good question here, what IS there out
there for us? The vintage records will all become
terra cognita sometime, despite the best efforts of,
say, our Northern Soul breth(and sist)ren continually
to enlarge the canon. But I've been at ostensibly mod
spins where tracks like, on one hand, "Ramblin'
Gamblin' Man" by The Bob Seger System, and, on the
other, "My Baby Portable Sound Player" by Pizzicato
Five were deployed to great effect, so ...
So, again, I ask, what to listen to? Never thought it
would be so difficult to get answers here ...

When a woman is tired of northern Soul she is tired of life. For there is
bla bla bla
Why do you need to listen to anything else? Nothing else comes close and
every kind of voice, tempo and emotion are catered for.
One of my flatmates would argue vehemently that you need a break from N S
now and again. thankfully the other one disagrees and majority rules.
Oh well, there's no accounting for it ...
