I was getting this error and it was because I had installed a certificate for
that host other than the one I was receiving. To be more precise, I had
installed Apache/1.3.4+OpenSSL/0.9.1c+mod_ssl/2.2.<mumble> and created a
test certificate for it. I surfed to *that* combo and told netscape to accept
and keep the test cert. When I compiled the newer stuff (same versions as
you), I generated a new test cert. Netscape doesn't like that. In the
'Communicator' menu select tools, then security info. A dialog will pop up.
Click on 'Certificates' then 'Web Sites'. Then choose the cert you've saved
for your test site and punch the delete button.
That got rid of the I/O error for me.
