Perhaps you just have enabled client authentication?

I suggest to try a connect against 
"openssl s_server -port 443 -www" and check wether 
the browser connect then. Play with the options 
-ssl2, -ssl3, -tls1, -no_ssl2, -no_ssl3, -no_tls1
if it doesn'T run right from the beginning.

Another problem might occur if you don't have a
cert from a embedded CA.
