In the defense of RPM.. they are _GREAT_ if you know what you are doing
with them. For example, I build my own all the time to roll out our custom
software across large numbers of Linux boxes.. it's so much easier to
write a spec file, compile once on a fast box, and then distribute the RPM
to all the machines, than to spend the time to ssh to each box, copy the
source over, compile it, and manually install it..
