Dave -- Here is my server platform:
Apache/1.3.19 (Unix) DAV/1.0.2 mod_ssl/2.8.3 OpenSSL/0.9.6
and my client platform:
MS Windows 98, Second Edition, 4.10.2222 A
MS Internet Explorer 5.50.4522.1800, update versions SP1
The creation of a web folder for the location https://host/author
(using the "Add Web Folder" in the "Web Folders" folder) requires one
authentication. I requested that my username/password be saved.
Opening the created web folder requires no re-authentication.
Maneuvering around the location's various folders also requires no
re-authentication. What _does_ require re-authentication is
performing an open on a file that requires some other application on
the client (Windows) side. E.g., opening an HTML document (which
starts MSIE) requires a re-authentication, or opening an MS Word
document requires a re-authentication. The situation is similar for
other file types.
The reason this is a problem is that the users of this system (the
authors) should not be expected to re-authenticate each and every time
they wish to view or manipulate common file types contained in the web
folders. Seems reasonable. No doubt this is a quirk of the MS Web
Folders implementation -- clients like cadaver (command-line-based)
don't behave in this manner.
Are your users viewing and/or manipulating files using other
applications on the client (Windows) side? Must they re-authenticate?
BTW, I realize this has become off-topic for modssl-users.
I'll continue off the list if anyone has a complaint.
Thanks,
