Fran�ois, Forgive me for being verbose and being off topic. I have Rewrite running on plain old apache, thought the problems may be tied in with mod_ssl, perhaps placement of RewriteEngine on in the httpd.conf. As for LoadModule directive, If you checkout my compile options you will see I specified apache to include rewrite. Am I off the track here?
